Repeat offenders a headache for Sunnyside police

LISTEN: Jointly, the records of the suspects revealed previous jail sentences for theft, robbery and murder.

Sunnyside police will oppose bail for three repeat offenders when they appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

Sunnyside police spokesperson Captain Daniel Mavimbela said the men were arrested outside an unoccupied house.

“The suspects, aged 28, 30 and 38, were caught when the police spotted them inside the premises of an unoccupied house in Sunnyside on 27 September, which led to a suspicion that a burglary was imminent,” said Mavimbela.

He said a Mazda Drifter reportedly stolen in Mpumalanga was used during a burglary in September last year where two stolen flat screen TVs were among items allegedly found on one of the offenders.

Mavimbela said two of the offenders were currently out on bail on a charge of possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle, while the third was facing charges of hijacking and house robbery.

Sunnyside police station commander Brigadier Ramakamakama Kekana said it was no surprise police found that the offenders were involved in other crimes after doing a background check on them.

“Having cultivated a culture of running a background check on every suspect we arrest, it came as no surprise when we discovered that each of the three suspects can be safely classified as repeat offenders,” Kekana said shortly after the men were caught.

He said the records of the offenders revealed previous jail sentences for theft, robbery and murder.

“We strongly believe that if the trio were to be released again on bail this Friday, the security and safety of our community will be in jeopardy. It is disturbing that almost every suspect we arrest for serious and violent crimes locally, is either on bail, parole or a former convict,” said Kekana.
