UPDATE: Santaco distances itself from taxi strike

Santaco has distanced itself from the taxi strike scheduled to start today

The SA Taxi Association Council (Santaco) has distanced itself from the illegal taxi strike by the Democratic Taxi Workers’ Union of SA (Detwusa).

Santaco spokesperson, McDonald Makata, said the council was not aware of the strike as it was not informed of the protest action but had heard rumours.

“We have an open door policy and we are not saying they must not strike, but proper channels must be followed and they have never come forward for us to hear their issues as council. We are not part of the march as Santaco,” said Makata.

This comes after reports that there would be a week-long protest action from taxi drivers leaving residents of Soshanguve, Mabopane, Ga-Rankuwa, Atteridgeville, Mamelodi, Ekangala and Centurion stranded starting from Monday.

Motorists are advised to avoid the following roads which may be affected – Hebron, Hornsnek, Lucas Mangope/M21, N4, N4 in Mamelodi, R101, R104, R513, R566, R80 in Soshanguve, Ga-Rankuwa and Mabopane, Ruth First Road, Stormvoel/M8 and Tsamaya Avenue.
