Money-raiser to help fight Pretoria boy’s cancer battle

Mark the 30th of September in your diary to assist the Michael family with their medical bills.

Tragedy struck a loving Pretoria east family in September 2016 when their eldest son, Gabriel Michael, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in his left femur.

Osteosarcoma (also called osteogenic sarcoma) is a type of cancer that starts in the bones.

Little Gabriel, now seven, started chemotherapy shortly after being diagnosed and chose to shave off his own hair when it started falling out.

In November 2016 a money-raising event was held towards his treatment that included a fun-filled train ride from Hermanstad station to Cullinan. The money-raiser was special because it runs straight past Gabriel’s house where he could see the train and wave to passengers on board.

Tshwane metro police and Monitor Net also chose Gabriel as the recipient of money they raised from a tyre flipping event that took place to raise awareness towards childhood cancer.

The tyre flipping took place from Dis Chem in Jean Avenue, Centurion all the way to Unitas hospital where the paediatric oncology unit is.

After the event, the children in the oncology ward were treated to a visit by metro police, some fairies armed with story books and lots of fun to entertain them on a Saturday morning.

In January Gabriel had his first femur replacement surgery, and to everyone’s amazement, he took his first steps with crutches three days afterwards.

In July Gabriel had leg straightening surgery that left him in a lot of pain but he was able to assist himself in walking again.

On 1 August Gabriel and his family got the amazing news that his blood test results came back clear, meaning there were no signs of cancer in his body.

Life is slowly returning to normal for this extremely strong little boy, and to assist the family with their medical bills people are going the extra mile.

An event is being held to raise money towards Gabriel’s medical bills and to raise awareness towards childhood cancer.

An exciting and never-before beard auction will take place at Thirst@28degrees East. The moneyraiser promises to deliver laughter, fun-filled activities and a music line-up that would be a never-to-be-forgotten event.

The beard auction takes place at 20:00 on 30 September.

Do not miss this exciting event. All proceeds will go to Gabriel’s cancer fund.
