Silverton police eradicating drugs in schools

"We have embarked on crime prevention campaigns which aim to keep our young ones off the streets and inside the classrooms."

Silverton police have embarked on a new strategy to tackle the scourge of drug prevalence in schools.

Spokesperson Captain Jan Sepato said the best way to eradicate drugs was to strengthen relationships between schools, parents, and police.

“We have embarked on crime prevention campaigns which aim to keep our young ones off the streets and inside the classrooms,” said Sepato.

“Through this new campaign, we are working in a community safety programme, which includes parents, teachers, school governing bodies and officers.

“We will do routine checks in schools to ensure drug-free environment,” he said.

“Parents and guardians are urged to monitor their children especially teenagers. It is very important to know what your children are up to and who they befriend,” Sepato said.

“They should be able to pick up a certain behaviour or attitude which might be caused by drug usage. If so, they are expected to report them or bring them to the station.”
