UPDATE: Tshwane bus damaged in taxi strike

Some of the passengers were forced out of the buses.

A Tshwane bus was damaged when it was pelted with stones during a protest by taxi drivers in central Pretoria on Wednesday.

Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said some passengers were also forced out of buses.

He said most of the streets in the city centre had been closed and cordoned off, affecting bus services.

“Against this background, we decided to withdraw the buses to the depot in order to safeguard our assets, our drivers and our passengers.”

He said the metro had warned Tshwane Bus Service (TBS) commuters about a possible disruption of services during the strike.

“This was as a result of planned taxi marches that were expected to take place in the city centre.”

Mashigo said the metro had expected the bus service to run as usual the first portion of the day between 04h30 to 10h00.

“Due to the criminal incident that occurred around midday, we were forced to withdraw our services. Commuters are advised to make alternative travel arrangements,” he said.

“We regret the inconvenience caused by the withdrawal of TBS operations, but the decision was made in the interest of safety.”

He said the metro would always strive to ensure that a safe, efficient and reliable service was provided to Tshwane bus customers.
