Arcadia retirement home celebrates 40 years

Kronendal retirement home opened its doors on 1 June 1977.

Kronendal retirement home in Arcadia celebrated its 40th birthday on 7 June.

The day was marked with a party for residents and staff.

Once a hotel, Kronendal was transformed into a retirement home and opened its doors on 1 June 1977.

Manager Mulder van Eyk said many residents would describe Kronendal as an oasis.

“The social interaction between residents enhances a sense of belonging – a sense of a loving home where you can enjoy life.”

Van Eyk described the residents of Kronendal as the crowns of the home.

Chairperson of the resident’s association Quini Myburgh said there was a variety of knowledge and experience among the residents.

About 160 residents, staff and guests joined the party, held in the dining hall, where they were treated to a very special three course meal.

A cake with a picture of Kronendal on it was also served.

Betsie Beyers, Kronendal’s oldest resident who has also lived there the longest, cut the cake.

Beyers is 102 years old and moved in three months after the doors opened.
