Unisa students protest over exam delay

Students burned tyres and blockaded roads at the Unisa Sunnyside campus Tuesday as they demanded exams be postponed.

Students burned tyres and blockaded roads at the Unisa Sunnyside campus as they demanded exams be postponed.

An eyewitness told Rekord the students started protesting on Monday.

The witness said she was attending a wellness workshop at the campus when students, wearing yellow regalia, burst in.

“We were locked in and forced to go out through an emergency exit. I had no idea what was going on,” said the witness.

Unisa spokesperson Martin Ramotshela said: “Our Sunnyside branch is closed for business. Regional students made it difficult for people to access the branch.”

He said students were dissatisfied with “an unresolved issue of their request for the postponement of exams”.

Ramotshela said he did not know when the campus would reopen.

“We hope it is open for business by tomorrow (Tuesday).”

Ramotshela could not be reached for comment on Tuesday as his phone rang unanswered.

Tshwane metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said the campus was calm and his police were at the scene.

“Sunnyside is clear, traffic is flowing freely. We are monitoring the area and have since removed rubble there,” said Mahamba.
