Sunnyside hijacker granted bail

The court also found that the suspect is a parolee and had served a 7 to 8 year sentence for attempted car theft.

A man who was arrested for attempted hijacking in March was granted R2 000 bail on Wednesday in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.

According to reports, two armed men had threatened a man at Barclays Square in Sunnyside and ordered him to get out of his Range Rover. Police were called in and told that one of the suspects grabbed the keys from the ignition during an altercation which ensued between the driver and the suspects.

Sunnyside police spokesperson Captain Daniel Mavimbela said the suspects were believed to have used a white Toyota Corolla to escape the scene.

“Acting on information, the police stopped the car a few blocks away from Barclay Square and apprehended the suspect. He was reportedly found in possession of the Range Rover’s keys,” said Mavimbela.

He said the man’s accomplice was still on the run and police were doing their best to find him. A police task team was created to ensure the arrest of the hijackers in Sunnyside. The man appeared on Monday and the case was postponed to Wednesday for a formal bail application, where the man was granted R2 000 bail.
