AmaTuks on a point of no return

Back to back defeats sees Tuks 9th in the NFD table, with a PSL return looking unlikely.

University of Pretoria’s hopes of returning to the PSL suffered a major blow when they lost 4-0 to Witbank Spurs last Saturday.

The Pretoria side were relegated to the National First Division (NFD) last season after failing to get out of the relegation playoffs.

They have struggled to find the consistency that saw them get promoted to the PSL five years ago when Steve Barker was still the head coach.

Having only accumulated 29 points in many games this season, an instant Absa Premiership return looks impossible.

Coach Shaun Bartlett took over in January last year when the side was last on the log.

Unfortunately he couldn’t do much as the students were eventually relegated to the NFD at the end of the 2015/16 season.

The former Bafana Bafana striker vowed to get Tuks back into top football form.

Almost 10 months later, the Pretoria side are sitting on 9th position on the log with fewer than nine games to play.

For them to reach the playoffs, they’ll need to win at least six and draw the rest.

That will give them 21 points which will add up to 50 by the end of the season.

Thanda Royal Zulu looks almost certain for PSL return but a dog fight for playoffs will be between Stellenbosch, Mthatha Bucks and Black Leopards.

Automatic promotion is certainly out of reach for Bartlett side.

A few seasons he guided Golden Arrows from the NFD to PSL but it looks like this time around, he’ll wait a little longer if he happens to keep his job.

In two weeks time, AmaTuks will host Royal Eagles at the Tuks stadium.
