Man in court for attempted hijacking in Sunnyside

A task team was established last week to ensure the speedy arrest of hijackers in Sunnyside.

A man appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of attempted hijacking.

The 38-year-old man was arrested following a foiled hijacking at Barclay Square in Sunnyside last Friday.

Police spokesperson Captain Daniel Mavimbela said the man and his accomplice approached a man exiting the shopping centre in his Range Rover and ordered him out of his vehicle.

“An altercation ensued between the driver and the suspects and one of the suspects grabbed the keys from the ignition,” said Mavimbela.

“The suspects escaped in a white Toyota Corolla.”

Mavimbela said police acted on information provided by the victim and were able to stop the getaway vehicle a few blocks from the scene.

Mavimbela said the arrested man was found in possession of the Range Rover’s keys, which were returned to the owner.

He said a task team was established last week to ensure the speedy arrest of hijackers in Sunnyside.

“We trust this could be the breakthrough we needed,” said Sunnyside station commander Brigadier Ramakamakama Kekana soon after the suspect was arrested.

The man was expected to appear in court again next Monday.

Six other people were arrested in Sunnyside last week on charges of hijacking and were expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court this week.
