LETTER: ‘Municipality falling short of its obligations’

A resident in Hillshaven and Glenharvie writes a letter saying that the efforts of the local municipality have yielded limited results and residents' concerns are consistently ignored or sidelined by the municipality.

Our local municipality, tasked with the essential responsibility of providing vital services to the residents, has fallen short of its obligations. This inadequacy has resulted in adverse effects on the lives of countless people in our community. These inadequacies include:

• Infrastructure neglect: Malfunctioning street lights, overlapping grass, and deteriorating manholes have become commonplace, posing significant risks to public safety and hampering economic growth

• Inadequate waste management: Garbage collection and disposal systems have been grossly mismanaged, leading to unsightly and unhygienic conditions in public spaces

• Lack of water access to some houses: Some areas continue to face erratic water supply, leaving households and businesses struggling to meet their basic needs.

The biggest challenge we are facing as the Hillshaven/ Mountainview and Glenharvie communities is cable theft. We are left with no electricity for hours, sometimes days due to cable theft. We have engaged with the municipality but nothing has been done. The cable theft happens at least every week for the past year or so.

As concerned citizens, we have attempted to address these issues through traditional channels, including contacting municipal officials and attending community meetings. Unfortunately, our efforts have yielded limited results and it appears that our concerns are consistently ignored or sidelined.

The Randfontein Herald has approached Rand West City Local Municipality for comment on the matter and will be published once received — Ed.
