It takes a (retirement) village

If you’re part of an active older generation or have ageing parents who are still healthy and young at heart, moving to a retirement village is probably the last thing on your mind. But it’s essential to plan ahead, especially in such uncertain times, and there are many benefits to consider.

So why buy in?

When buying into retirement villages, there are flexible models to suit everyone’s needs. For example, the Life Right Model ensures residents come in at an initial investment and then pay affordable monthly fees. Levies may increase annually but they are predicted two years advance so that you are fully aware of the amount you’re paying. Another plus is that, unlike sectional title developments, Life Right developed cannot impose special levies. This gives you and your spouse the inalienable right of occupation for the remainder of your lives. As the developer retains ownership of the property, bonds, transfer fees and VAT fall away.

Security & Maintenance

At most professional retirement villages, 24-hour security and armed response is part of the package.  This allows you the freedom to lock-up-and-go, knowing your home is safe. On-site teams oversee your home maintenance, catering, cleaning, laundry and gardening. As the developer retains full ownership of the property, there vested interest in maintaining the best standards.

What about Healthcare?

Personalised home-based healthcare is available at many retirement villages and is much more affordable than nursing in private homes. On-site emergency services, 24-hour nursing and frail care is also offered at some homes, so check before you buy! If you’re looking after an unwell spouse, this burden can be shared.

Community

Retirement villages are vibrant communities and many active retirees choose to move there for the social lifestyle. Many of them offer resort-style living with bistros, libraries, gardens and private gyms with heated pools. Social events, like bridge evenings and film nights often take place so you may find you’re busier and more active than before.
