Gauteng West Boxing set for four years of expert leadership

“We are going to pick it up, dust it off and build on what the previous council achieved.”

From the musty gyms of the amateur world to the glitzy Las Vegas casinos, knowledge from a capable administration is key.

Gauteng West Boxing Organisation (GWBO) sat down for a regional meeting to elect their new council, 6 February. Those elected will serve a four-year term and be entrusted with the custodianship of boxing on the West Rand and beyond. Viking Academy will play a vital role in the sports’ rejuvenation as they have been elected to three vital positions within the organisation.

Phillip du Rand will lead GWBO as President, while Rolene Deetlefs and Theo Lindeque will serve as General Secretary and Coaches Commission Chairman, respectively. “We want to bring boxing where it was. Historically, this is a strong region where we used to have almost 30 boxing clubs. We are going to pick it up, dust it off and build on what the previous council achieved,” said Phillip.

The Coaches Commission plays a pivotal role in assessing and maintaining the highest possible standards inside the ring. Assisted by Coaches Commission Secretary, Sanet Botha from Fire and Ice Boxing Club, Theo will be entrusted with keeping the coaches’ skills at the optimum level, ensuring only the training is given to in-ring talent.

West Krugersdorp Boxing Club and Protearif Boxing Club will also have a strong presence on the council. Charles Charlez will be Vice President while Susan da Silva will act as Treasurer, and both are from West Krugersdorp. Both Public Relations Officer and accompanying Secretary will come from Protearif, with those positions filled by Frans Moller and Dorothy Moller.
