Volvo’s new C40 Recharge unveiled with coupe-like design cues

The new Volvo C40 Recharge will go into production in September 2021 and will be built alongside the XC40 Recharge.

Volvo has unveiled its new C40 Recharge crossover vehicle as it gears up to have 50 per cent of its global sales volume to consist of fully electric vars by 2025 with the rest hybrids. By 2030, the Swedish carmaker plans for every car it sells to be pure electric.

The new Volvo C40 Recharge will go into production in September 2021 and will be built alongside the XC40 Recharge at the brand’s production plant in Ghent, Belgium.

The new Volvo C40 Recharge is based on the CMA vehicle platform and spawns a coupe-like design styling element with a sloping roofline plus a new face for Volvo electric cars.

The front is bolstered with headlights that feature pixel-technology. The interior is available with an array of colour and deco options to choose from and for the first time in a Volvo car, it is leather-free.

The infotainment system has been jointly developed with Google and it is based on the Android operating system that incorporates Google Apps, Google Maps, Google Assistant plus Google Play Store. The Volvo C40 Recharge’s unlimited data enables connectivity that enables the vehicle to receive software updates over the air.

The new Volvo C40 Recharge is powered by a 78kWh battery that runs two electric motors situated on the front and rear axle. The battery can be recharged to 80 per cent in about 40 minutes.

Volvo claims the new C40 Recharge can travel up to 420 km on a single charge and that is expected to improve over time through the over-the-air software upgrades.

On the other hand, Volvo will announce the launch of the XC40 Recharge model in South Africa this month and according to Greg Maruszewski, Managing Director at Volvo Car South Africa, the local arm of the Swedish carmaker is delighted to bring its first all-electric car to Mzansi as it is a very important step in its plans to sell only pure electric cars by 2030.

The fully electric C40 Recharge as well as the XC40 Recharge will be available online only and come with a convenient care package that includes items such as service, warranty, roadside assistance, as well as insurance and home charging options.
