Autotrader South African Car Of The Year 2020 announced

Following the rigorous evaluation period, the results of the 2020 Autotrader South African Car Of The Year (COTY) has been announced.

Competing against the most deserving and capable of finalist, the Jaguar I-PACE EV400 AWD SE took the top spot on the podium, closely followed by the Mercedes-Benz GLE400d 4Matic in second place and the Toyota GR Supra 3.0T in third. This feat marks the first time in the history of the prestigious event where not only a Jaguar has taken the number one position but also the first time an electric car has won. This success is made even more special by the fact that the Jaguar also claimed the top position at the 2019 World Car of the Year, World Car Design of the Year and World Green Car awards.

Numerous other vehicles received high acclaim in their respective segments, the first of which is the Hyundai Atos 1.1 Motion which conquered the stiff competition in the Urban Category for the win. The number one vehicle in the Family category comes in the form of the Toyota Corolla Hatch 1.2T XR CVT while the Leisure category was won by the locally popular Volkswagen T-Cross 1.0 TSI Comfortline 85kW DSG. Bakkie enthusiasts will be happy to hear that the Ford Ranger Raptor jumped to the top of the Lifestyle Utility Vehicles category while the Premium Car category was won by the overall winner, the Jaguar I-PACE EV400 AWD SE.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE400d 4Matic features again as the winner of the Premium SUV category while the Toyota GR Supra 3.0T dominated the Sport and Performance category. Since 1986 vehicle manufacturers could compete for the coveted South African Car of the Year trophy and while it continues to reward automotive excellence the competition has evolved of the years to include categories.
