Why she sings in so many languages

Maryna Booysen, 22, explains to the Herald why she sings in many languages.

Maryna Booysen said her versatility by being able to sing in five different languages gives many audiences of different cultures a chance to hear messages through her soothing voice.

The Herald caught up with the 22-year-old recently while performing at a fundraiser for a day care to tell us why singing in many languages is important.

What is even more fascinating is that although she does not speak these languages, she has mastered singing in Spanish, French, Italian, German, English and Afrikaans. She still wants to master performing in some of the indigenous languages

“I do my research to learn what the content of the song is, how to sing the words and what message you actually bring to your audience,” Maryna said.

All I have to do is learn the phonetics and listen to original artists, and work on different covers of the songs.”

However, she said this requires a lot of coaching and vocal training.

Among the iconic artists she wants to emulate, Maryna named the late Brenda Fassie and the famous band Mango Groove.

When asked why she sings in these languages, Maryna said it not only broadens her repertoire, but as a contemporary artist, she needs to offer a mixtures of genres to appeal to a wide variety of music lovers.

“If I like a song, and I want to sing it, it does not matter what the language of the song is. It is basically about what I like, the message the song carries and the vibe it gives,” Maryna said.
