If you’re looking for something to do at home this December break, here are 8 series you should consider binge-watching

The eight shows include five based on a list from Rotten Tomatoes, as well as three of my favourites.

The December break is set to start for most companies on Friday, 14 December, and for those of you who are looking for TV shows to binge-watch, here are eight you should definitely consider.

Whether it’s the December break, or the middle of the year, most of us are constantly on the look-out for TV shows to watch. But the December break is a good time to do some catching up on your series by bingeing before the shows return from their production breaks.

In light of this here are five shows which, according to Rotten Tomatoes, you should take a look at, with an additional three of my favourites which I feel you should try out this December.

1. Counterpart

Rotten Tomatoes synopsis: From creator Justin Marks, Counterpart is a sci-fi drama centred on Howard Silks, a low-level employee at a nondescript agency in Berlin who learns that his employer is actually guarding and operating an underground tunnel that connects to a parallel world that mirrors his own. The catch is that everyone has an identical-but-different counterpart in this parallel dimension, and his is a top-level spy intimately involved in the brewing war between both sides of the tunnel.

Time to complete all episodes: Approximately 10 hours for the first season.

2. A Series of Unfortunate Events

Rotten Tomatoes synopsis: Those poor, poor Baudelaire orphans – always getting caught up in events that are, well, unfortunate. Netflix’s whimsically dark series follows Violet, Klaus, and Sunny who, after their parents’ death, are put in the care of an evil distant cousin, Count Olaf (Neil Patrick Harris), who’s set on getting his hands on their sizeable inheritance.

Time to complete all episodes: Approximately 13 hours for the first two seasons.

3. Timeless

Rotten Tomatoes synopsis: From creators Eric Kripke and Shawn Ryan, Timeless stars Abigail Spencer, Malcolm Barrett, and Matt Lanter as a trio (a professor, a soldier, and an engineer) tasked with travelling through time to save the world – and history – as we know it.

Time to complete all episodes: Approximately 18 hours for the first two seasons.

4. Marvel’s Runaways

Rotten Tomatoes synopsis: Creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage leave their mark on the Marvel Cinematic Universe with this hit Hulu series based on the comic of the same name, which follows a motley group of super-powered teens who unite to stop their super-villian parents.

Time to complete all episodes: Approximately 8,5 hours for the first season.

5. Gotham

Rotten Tomatoes synopsis: The city of Gotham was a mess well before Batman had anything to do with it, and this Fox hit depicts exactly how and why in this origin story of Commissioner Gordon’s rise to prominence and Bruce Wayne’s transformation into Batman – and the varied ne’er-do-wells they dealt with along the way.

Time to complete all episodes: Approximately 65 hours for the first four seasons.

Now comes time for my three picks:

6. Game of Thrones

Why I think you should watch it: Game of Thrones is arguably one of the most successful TV shows to ever air, and its long list of awards backs up that statement. From the powerful rounded characters, to the fact that every episode is packed with a balance of action, drama, and comedy or the fact that you never know if your favourite character will make it through the next scene, the show simply has it all in my eyes. With the final season coming in April 2019, now would be a good time to catch up on everything that’s unfolded in the first seven seasons.

Time to complete all episodes: Approximately 64 hours for the first seven seasons.

7. Lucifer

Why I think you should watch it: This is quite honestly the one show which at first glance I thought I’d never find myself watching. But, once I gave it a fair chance, I was hooked. The show explores the comic book adaptation of Lucifer, the ruler of Hell (yes, the devil) trying to make a life on Earth as a nightclub owner and civilian consultant for the Los Angeles Police Department. Tom Ellis’ portrayal of Lucifer is charismatic, enigmatic, and simply what you’d expect of the devil, and his relationship with his police partner on-screen is amusing to say the least. It might be a little on the chin for devout Christians as it challenges a few common perceptions of the devil. With a fourth season coming in 2019, now’s a good time to catch up on all the devilish fun.

Time to complete all episodes: Approximately 40 hours for the first three seasons.

8. 13 Reasons Why

Why I think you should watch it: 13 Reasons Why is an incredibly raw show that tackles a lot of tough topics that society is pretty scared to talk about in the open. From rape to suicide to bullying, the show refuses to hold back on anything. Katherine Langford’s portrayal of Hannah Baker is powerful, and really helps shine a light on the problems that teenagers face on a societal level in high school. While the show has received some backlash for just how raw it is, I feel that the way it openly deals with the topics it handles justifies watching it. There is a third season set, which will finally stray from Hannah Baker’s story-line, which should air next year.

Time to complete all episodes: Approximately 24,5 hours for the first two seasons.
