Massive electricity hike from April 2018?

I heard a little birdie saying users could pay almost 20 per cent more for electricity from April 2018.

If paying more than R1 200 for just six bags of groceries is not enough, we are now asked to cough up almost 20 per cent more for electricity as of next April.

No, this is not a joke!

According to Solar Power News, Eskom has confirmed that the board approved a draft revenue application for national energy regulator Nersa’s approval, after a leaked document showed it wants clients to pay 19,9 per cent more from 1 April 2018.

So what now? Just another day in the office in South Africa, or is there something we can do? Is solar power the way to go?

For the time being and as electricity user, here is what you can do to hedge yourself against the possible increase:

• Reduce your electricity usage by using more efficient appliances

• Become independent by installing solar power equipment
