Randfontein has seen its share of horrific cases of child abuse over the years and despite all the best efforts of our local police department, I fear that the situation has not improved.

Our courts only seem to be really proactive in combating child abuse during the annual child protection month and the monsters that abuse and rape the innocent little ones get off lightly most of the time.

The Herald has had to grudgingly give up on intentions to publish the sexual offender’s register due to everyone from the local courts to the Justice Department sending us from pillar to post when it came to obtaining the register.

Serial child molestor and self confessed pedophile Thys Taljaard, whose case sent a shock wave through the community of Randfontein, has according to reports been released from prison after spending less than a year of his three year sentence nice and comfy in a rehabilitation programme and no amount of enquiry would persuade the authorities to reveal whether he is back in Randfontein or not.

Is that effective child protection?

I think not.
