Drunk driver causes R28 accident

An apparently drunk driver swung out of a side road onto the R28 without warning.

The Herald‘s distribution supervisor, Richard Ndabambi is lucky to be alive after an apparently  drunk driver swung from a small road and onto the R28 near Hillshaven without stopping, causing Victor to crash into the back of the inebriated man’s bakkie.

According to Caxton West Rand Distribution Manager, Philip Opperman, Victor was on his way to oversee deliveries of the Randfontein/ Westonaria Herald in Glenharvie on 18 March, when the accident occurred.

Victor was heading toward Glenharvie along the R28 when, without warning, a bakkie came at speed from a side road and swung onto the R28 right in front of him.

He tried to avoid the impending collision, but it was impossible.

Opperman says that when he arrived at the scene a short while later, it was obvious that there was something out of place with the driver of the bakkie.

The man had trouble getting out of his car and it was definitely not due to any injury that he may have sustained.

Police were called to the scene and the driver of the bakkie was taken into custody for an alcohol test to be performed at the police station.

Victor was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Luckily, he was not seriously injured.

According to Caxton’s operations manager, Petra Swart she immediately arranged for Victor to be taken to a local hospital.

“I could not believe the fast and efficient service I received from the Lenmed Private Hospital in Randfontein,” says Petra.

“I did not have all the correct forms with me and the staff at Lenmed arranged everything for me in a jiffy.

“It is not often that you see this level of efficiency, especially in an emergency situation.

“I have to give them a big thumbs up.”
