Motivated to trail run!

RandMark's running representative explains the ins and outs of trail running.

RandMark running representative Karin Bezuidenhout shared some motivational information about trail running that is regarded as beneficial to fitness fanatics.

“Trail running is a unique experience which often has single track trails, dirt roads, hilly terrain and rocky or uneven surfaces,” said Karin.

She explained what makes trail running different from road running, is that road running is organised on the roads in town, traffic is stopped for the runners and the areas are cordoned off. Traffic officers also ensure the safety of the runners at big intersections and let the traffic pass when the time is right. Trail running on the other hand is in the open with no cars or traffic and no pollution.

The benefits include scenic views and connecting with nature. Karin added the impact on the joints is less than it is when running on the road. The groups of people running trail runs are also smaller, with around 300 people in trail running and 3 000 in road races.

To prepare for trail running Karin advised working up from just walking trail runs to running as you get fitter., she added most races offer 5km and then work up to longer distances. She noted with trail running you have to concentrate more and pick your feet up higher or you will fall.

“Watching the ground and area you are running on is vital to staying on your feet. The parkruns that so many people do are good training as they are all off-road and give you an idea of what it’s like to do trail runs.”

The challenges include uneven terrain, rocks, roots and loose gravel which can cause you to trip or fall. Elevated routes also make for strenuous walks and runs.

The best way to handle the terrain, Karin explained is by concentrating on running and picking your feet up higher than when road running.

“When the terrain is seriously elevated you walk … so many people on route walk, you won’t feel out at all. It’s normally only the elite runners that run certain sections of the run the rest of us walk.”

She added to wear trail running shoes which offer more grip and comfortable clothing and when going on long trail runs take a hydration pack or water bottles.

She advised first-time runners to first check the route out, they are normally rated, so a five out of five would be an extremely difficult and technical run. But one or two or even three out of five would be doable.

“Then I would say just go for it, it’s fun and adventurous and gives you time to do some self-discovery. This is an amazing activity to get involved with as we have so many beautiful reserves around us, offering amazing trail runs.”

As a trail runner for about 15 years herself, Karin noted she would rather do a trail run than a road race even though she has done almost all the bog road races there are along with two Comrades Marathons.

“In Covid, we started running off-road to keep fit and then once we came back it was nice to do small trail runs with around 50 people. I started with Wild African Experiences and am still doing many of their trail runs. I am hooked and love trail running – it’s my break away from the everyday normality.”

RandMark has a group of women who do different trail walks on Saturdays. Those interested can contact Karin on 084 500 0522.
