Randfontein Elite Chess Club hosted a chess night in preparation for the West Rand Trials.

On August 28, many chess enthusiasts gathered at Laerskool Rapportryer for a fun night of chess and community togetherness. The night also served as preparation for the West Rand Trials they are set to participate in on September 7. For those who do not play competitively, it was a night of testing their skills with players alike.

Roan Fourie, the club’s marketing administrator, explained that they started the club in July 2023 when they noticed a need for chess as an activity outside of schools. Every Wednesday from 18:00 to 20:00, they gather at the school, although he mentioned they sometimes have to give up the venue for school functions.

“Our cosy venue provides a comfortable and friendly atmosphere, complete with tables and chess sets, ensuring a delightful playing experience. We foster a supportive environment and experienced players are always ready to lend a helping hand to beginners. One of the key purposes of the club is to educate and prepare the children for chess matches,” he said.
