From Jukskei to running and soccer – veterans show how it’s done

Soccer grannies and veteran footballers and sportsmen gave it their all during a sporting programme organised by the government.

Veteran sportsmen and even grandmothers put their fitness to the test as they participated in various sporting codes at the Patrick Ace Ntsoelengoe Stadium in Mohlakeng recently.

The games are part of a programme for the elderly from the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation.

In soccer, the Mohlakeng Soccer Legions women’s team (aged 60 to 70) had a 6–0 thumping from their neighbours in Kagiso. The men’s team was on top form as they walloped their Mogale City neighbours from Swaneville with a score of 4–1.

The Mohlakeng team had an illustrious team of legends who had once plied their trade in the top-flight National Provincial Soccer League professional teams.

These legends include Thomas Satch Manyisa, who played for Vaal Pros and Moroka Swallows and who is the uncle to Oupa Ace Manyisa, a former Bafana Bafana player and Orlando Pirates captain. Another player included Ernest Skalo Ntsoelengoe, the young brother to the late Kaizer Chiefs legend Patrick Ace Ntsoelengoe.

“We are pleased as a department to have the elderly busy in sports and recreational activities,” said Maphata Ramphela from the department.

Those who won in their respective codes will face other teams in the provincial Golden Games.
