Gauteng Bowls take things up a notch

2024 is knocking on our doors and with that comes the start of the new bowls season within Gauteng across its five districts.

2024 is knocking on our doors and with that comes the start of the new bowls season in Gauteng across its five districts.

The five districts in Gauteng are:

1. Johannesburg Bowls Association (32 clubs) 1 486 members
2. Bowls Gauteng North (22 clubs) 1 925 members
3. Ekurhuleni Bowls District (20 clubs) 1 437 members
4. Sables (10 clubs) 779 members
5. Sedibeng (7 clubs) 312 members

With the new year also comes the announcement of a new president for the province – Sanette Kritzinger.

Sanette, an avid bowler and current member at Harlequins Bowling Club, has been bowling for more than 20 years and has also served for many years as an executive on the Bowls Gauteng Committee plus has also successfully managed the BGN Ladies District teams.

“Being elected as president of Gauteng Bowls is a well-received responsibility that will allow for fresh, new, and exciting changes to be implemented to grow the interest for this great sport.”

With a large portfolio to manage, Sanette has the support of her executive team including Mike Hunt (Kempton Park Bowling Club) as secretary representing the Ekurhuleni Bowls district and Wimpie Muller (Brits Bowling Club) as treasurer representing the Bowls Gauteng North district.

The team of delegates from each district includes Alana Warrender (Ekurhuleni), Rob Zimmerman (Johannesburg Bowls Association), Mark Petzer (Sables), Basil le Grange (Bowls Gauteng North) and Raymond Hocknell (Sedibeng).

Critical to the success of growing the Gauteng Bowls province is the appointment of a marketing and media team, both ensuring that anything and all things bowls-related get seen and heard in the right places at the right time.

Headed up by a two-man strong team includes Chantal Nel from Harlequins Bowling Club and the BGN district who will manage the Johannesburg and BGN districts. Chantal Henn (nee Grotto) who hails from Benoni Bowling Club from the Ekurhuleni district will manage Ekurhuleni, Sedibeng, and Sables districts.

Wimpie Muller is the treasurer of Gauteng Bowls.

“We kick off 2024 with the Gauteng Challenge held in the Sedibeng district that includes selected top district bowlers from our province bowling against each other in their attempts to take home gold,“ said Sanette.

Gauteng province currently contributes the largest number of bowlers in the Protea team and delivers a massive number of over 6 000 bowlers alone. With this in mind, it’s fair to say that Gauteng is your bowling province of gold.
