Fun run held in Toekies to create healthy living

The Toekomsrus community attended another run-and-walk event to spread awareness about cancer and health.

The community of Toekomsrus held a run-and-walk event at Nazarene Church to promote among others a healthy lifestyle and create cancer awareness on the first weekend of December.

The event was also a means of raising funds for the said church as well as urging the community to keep a healthy mind, body, and soul.

Nikita Padayachey, Eunice Seedat, and Lervirn Moses together with the church committee assisted Faizel Bhana in organising the event. Faizel sponsored the medals for the winners, and the colour dust as well as conducted the marketing for the event.

The 8km run was won by 13-year-old Junior Losper. Next to him is Portia Mashinini, who came in second place.

The 4km or 8km run-and-walk started at about 07:30 and concluded at 08:30. The entry fee was R50 for adults and R20 for children. The distances were completed by either running or walking to the finish line. A staggering 300 participants took part in the event and after crossing the finish line, participants received the opportunity to partake in an aerobics class, and medical testing for HIV, blood pressure as well as diabetes.

Cansa also attended the event as a means of spreading cancer awareness in the community. In addition, they educated the community about the possible causes and effects of cancer as well as detection and prevention.

“Such an event takes a lot of planning and effort. We wanted to spread the message of living a healthy life through exercise and God’s holy word. Thus families can spend more quality time together,” Faizel said.

He added that this event was for everyone with even the Randburg Deaf Running Club and other hearing-impaired people having participated in the fun.
