One jab at a time for young Eric

Hoërskool Riebeeckrand learner is a force to be reckoned with and is making a name for himself in the boxing fraternity.

Homelake resident, Hoërskool Riebeeckrand learner, and boxer at Randgate Amateur Boxing Club (RABC) Eric Westcott is a rising star in the ring.

This comes after he wrapped up his year by receiving a certificate of excellence for hard work and sportsmanship at the RABC last month.

This marks one of his many achievements, as the young lad received a certificate of outstanding performance earlier this year.

He also received a gold medal after coming out tops in the second round of the Gauteng development tournament on July 22 which was held by the RABC.

His latest achievements include four certificates and one diploma which he received at the West Rand District Prize-giving event on December 6. The event was held at the Krugesdorp West Boxing Club.

Speaking to the Randfontein Herald in an interview, his mother Linda van Rooyen said the 16-year-old has big dreams.

“Being an unprivileged child, Eric saw an excellent opportunity when the boxing club reopened after the pandemic and that’s when he decided to take advantage of it. He is a child who loves stories of Rocky Balboa and the Italian Stallion and that shaped his love for the sport.

“He sees himself much like an underprivileged child who has an opportunity to make it big in something that he is passionate about and he is determined to do just that,” said Linda, who added that she is overjoyed with how far her son has come.

She added that Eric is just as happy about his achievements and that he wants to achieve more as he grows up and would like to go as far as he possibly can in this opportunity.

He also thanks his coaches and Club President Willie Consalves for all their support.
