Up-and-coming boxers showcase their talent in Toekies
The boxing club is owned by Bokkie Martins famously known as Oom Bokkie who has produced some champions in the boxing fraternity.
The Eagles Boxing Club recently held a successful tournament where scores of up-and-coming boxers got in the ring to showcase their talent.
This was last month in Toekomsrus and the purpose of the event was to hone existing talent in the boxing fraternity in the region as well as plant a seed in those eager to get into the sport.
Speaking to the Randfontein Herald in an interview, one of the organisers, David Matthews, said the event attracted sponsorship from Thanya Productions who provided catering as well as the medals to honour the up-and-coming champions, even boxing kits, among others.
Eagles Boxing Club is owned by Bokkie Martins, most famously known as Oom Bokkie, who has produced some well-known champions in the boxing fraternity.
“This successful one-of-a-kind tournament was largely organised by Bokkie Martins who is also a trainer at the club. He managed to produce well-known champions in the past such as Jan Bergman and Malcolm Klassen who are proud products of Toekomsrus. Through this event, we wanted to ignite the hope from our local youth that they too can achieve such great success and can look up to such stars.
“We also wanted to eradicate the problem that we are currently sitting with of young people who have nothing to do with their lives and are eventually turning to alcohol and drugs. Our goal is to show them that Eagles Boxing Club still has the potential to rise from the ashes and be the best you can be,” said Matthews.
He added that the event wouldn’t have been a success without other organisers such as Tom Hogins, community development worker Lester Norton and the club’s chairperson Joseph Welkom. Trainers Anthony Johnson and Andrew Bergman as well as the Rand West City Local Municipality’s sports manager Dondo Sokhela were also thanked for making the event possible.
