Women’s football gaining traction in Rand West

The purpose of the event was to attract women to also take part in soccer and other sporting codes for their own benefit.

Scores of soccer players from different parts of Rand West City as well as fans came out to attend a Women’s Day sporting event. The Greenhills Stadium was packed with football stars, especially women, who were eager to showcase their talent.

The Randfontein Herald spoke to one of the organisers of the event and founder of the Super Tigers Football Academy Bongani Duiker who said the turnout was impressive.

“The purpose of the event was to celebrate Women’s Month and to ensure that we encourage women to get back into sports. We’ve come to realise that women aren’t so involved in sports anymore and that’s a problem for us hence we decided to even highlight the health benefits of taking part in sports.

“We hope that their involvement will spark more interest in young people to take part in the different sporting codes that exist for their benefit,” said Duiker.

He added that he wants to host an event of this nature annually on Women’s Day, with hopes of leveling the playing field for male and female developmental sports in the West Rand region.
