Disability sports academy seeks more members

Established in 2020, the academy is aimed at roping in disabled people in different communities and getting them to participate in sports such as wheelchair tennis.

The disabled community from different parts of Rand West City is being accommodated into the tennis sporting code and invited to join the Atlega Disability Sports Academy.

Established in 2020, the academy is aimed at roping in disabled people in different communities and getting them to participate in sports such as wheelchair tennis. This is with the hopes of getting them to be active and involved in interacting with other community members.

The Randfontein Herald spoke to Mohlakeng resident Salamina Molefe from the academy who said the sports academy only consists of four disabled people and they would like to see the numbers grow.

“We want people to be aware of the academy and know that they don’t have to close themselves off behind closed doors. There’s a way that they can stay active and keep fit despite their disability. Our main objective here is to change the status quo when it comes to people living with disabilities and encourage them that they too are just as able,” said Molefe.

She added that they also accommodate able persons into the academy as a way of growing their numbers but the core objective is to attract those that are disabled. The academy operates from the Mohlakeng Tennis Court where they hold training sessions in the afternoons.

The academy is also appealing to local businesses and community members for support and is asking for donations in the form of tennis rackets, tennis balls and sporting shoes.

To offer a helping hand, those interested are urged to contact Molefe on 063 031 9386.
