Footballing quartet waiting to be selected for big-name clubs

Coaches, family and friends are holding thumbs for four soccer players who have a chance of a life time.

Four youngsters from the Super Tigers Football Academy have participated in trials for a shot at representing top football clubs Orlando Pirates and Moroka Swallows. Should they get the thumbs up, they will be in action for the respective clubs’ U19 or U23 reserve teams in the MultiChoice Diski league.

This comes after their head of development Reetsang Matlhare approached the clubs and asked that they have a look at the talent they have at the academy and if they can absorb them in their structures. To do this, the boys aged between 18 and 23 had to undergo trials.

Reetsang, also the club chairperson, was full of praise for the youngsters and how far the academy has come.

Sphiwe Shea from Super Tigers Football Academy is happy to be going to the trials and is hoping to come back with positive news.

“After a tough start in 2022, where we only had one player, we can now proudly say that we’ve got a very good number of talented boys. Just last week, three of them went to Swallows for their trials and another at Orlando Pirates so we are just waiting for feedback to see which players they are interested in.

“This will give hope to others that they too can succeed as not everyone is meant to be a doctor or lawyer. We want all youth, however, to know that it is important to stay in school and embrace the fact that they can succeed on a sport level as well,” said Reetsang, who added that sports are mainly about discipline and that often, the fruits to one’s labour are not rewarded overnight.

Meanwhile, the Randfontein Herald also spoke to one of the four players, Siphiwe Shea, who said that he was thrilled to have been granted the opportunity and hopes to receive positive news.
