More than just winning for Toekomsrus United Football Club

Numerous youngsters of the Toekomsrus Football Club were in action recently and its founder said while it is not all about winning, their talent is being developed and are kept off the streets away from social ills.

Toekomsrus Football Club’s U15 and U17 teams were in high spirits and on top of their game recently when they locked horns with two other local football clubs.

This was at the Ace Ntsoeleng Stadium in Mohlakeng. Although the Toekies football club’s U15 team lost against Eleven Experience Football Club, their U17 team secured a massive 8-3 win against Dice Football Club.

Speaking to the Randfontein Herald in an interview, the founder of the Toekies football club Enrique Bhana said the games are instrumental in their development as a team.

“I think we are doing well. We are here for development. It’s not about winning but it’s about competing and developing youngsters, not only on the field but off the field as well. What I’ve realised is that most of these kids come from child-headed households and environments where there’s drug and alcohol abuse.

“They also come from households where their parents are single parents and as a professional life skills coach, I not only teach them about football but also life skills,” Enrique said.

He added that apart from this, they not only have to walk the walk but talk the talk when it comes to football. As such, Enrique said they now plan on expanding the club and having a female soccer team.

He said that the teams in his club have been registered with the development structures of the South African Football Association (SAFA) in Rand West City and are affiliated with the local league called the Randfontein Local Football Association.

“The most important thing for these boys is to get an opportunity. I had big opportunities when playing professional football and I want to do the same for these youngsters who I consider to be my sons. It is a big dream of mine,” said Enrique, who added sport helps keep children off the streets and away from social ills.
