Big bodybuilding strides for Romelia

Bodybuilding is one of the most selfish and difficult sports out there so Romelia applauds anyone willing to do it. PULL QUOTE: I wanted to see how far I could push my body

When one hears the word ‘bodybuilding’, one usually conjures up images a muscle-bound man. However, this sport isn’t just for men, and women have been making names for themselves in the sport. This is what Randfontein’s Romelia Andrews is aiming for.

The 26-year-old’s journey started last year after doing research about the industry, and mentally preparing herself for the big step and process ahead of her. “I have a deep urge always to want more from myself, especially when it comes to training. I wanted to see how far I could push my body, and what kind of transformation would result from pushing myself past my limits – my main reason for taking on bodybuilding,” she said.

She explained that the popularity of female bodybuilding has grown vastly over the past few years and it’s not as male dominated as it used to be. She added that women have the power to do anything they put their minds to, and be anything they want to be, so bodybuilding is a challenge for males and females as the sport requires extreme amounts of discipline, consistency, immense physical training and strict dietary habits.

Andrews believes it’s one of the most selfish and difficult sports, so she applauds anyone willing to do it.

“Bodybuilding makes me feel powerful – there’s an increase in my self-confidence and you develop a healthy self-esteem. Although there are many positives, I want people to be aware how mentally exhausting this sport is too. Every day isn’t a good day. You don’t feel like training every day and eating the same food every day. But you do it because your end goal is bigger than your emotions.”

She added that the changes in physical appearance and mental growth are what she likes most about the bodybuilding journey because you rediscover yourself each time.

“My advice to women who want to take on a journey like this is to prepare yourself. Do your research, find a reliable and dedicated coach, know that financially you need to be covered, you need a strong support system and do research on the different federations in South Africa. It’s not an easy journey and not a decision you make within a day. You need to be ready.”
