Long list of sporting events coming to Rand West City

'Programmes such as these keep the youth away from substance abuse as well as other ill behaviours of our society, therefore [there is] a need to conjure patriotism and ascend nation building' – government.

The Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation has published a list of sporting events to take place across Rand West City from August 13 to September 3.

According to Nomazwe Ntlokwana, spokesperson for the department, “The events are aimed to encourage the community to take part in creative spheres through arts and culture, and be active in sports activities thus live healthy lifestyles. Programmes such as these keep the youth away from substance abuse as well as other ill behaviours of our society, therefore [there is] a need to conjure patriotism and ascend nation building.”

She explained the first event, known as the Hanyani Wellness Programme, will take place every Saturday starting on Saturday, August 13 and concludes on September 3.

“We together with West Corridor under MEC Mbali Hlophe’s office will host the Hanyani Wellness Programme; this is the department’s role to encourage young and old to live a healthy lifestyle and become active citizens of society by exercising.

Many people visit health facilities for ailments that could have been prevented easily by a healthy diet and exercise. The programme is aimed at getting Gauteng active, healthy and fit, thereby reducing the burden on health services in the province.

“The elderly and youth alike will benefit from activities provided by professionals, such as yoga, aerobics, a 5km walk and run, as well as other recreational games.”

The second event called Sport for Social Change takes place on Sunday, August 14.

“Sport for Social change is an outreach programme by the department in partnership with community stakeholders to curb social ills, and effect change through sport, support communities in the war against GBVF, drug abuse and crime, and to tenure sport and recreational programmes to active communities in the West Corridor. The Sport for Social Change Programme assists in providing sustainable institutional support and the successful implementation of a social-cohesion strategy,” Nomazwe said.
