Hot cross-country action at Westonaria Sports Complex

Marko Bucarizza was too strong for Andries Sesedi in the men's 4km race. It was the first cross-country league event in Westonaria in three years.

After more than a three-year pause due to the pandemic the Westonaria Sports Complex once again hosted the annual Central Gauteng Athletics Cross Country League 5 on Saturday July 2.

The joint hosts were Warriors of the West and Mohlakeng Athletics Club.

Youngster Mnqobi Molefe from Mohlakeng Colossus Athletics Club finished in the Top 10 with a time of seven minutes and 35 seconds in the 2km for U/9s and the U/10 section for boys that were held simultaneously.

The 4km for U/13 boys was also one of the highlights. Tyrone Brooks from Boxer Athletics Club, who had claimed three league titles thus far, once again led from the start to cross the finish line in a time of 14 minutes and five seconds.

“I am happy with my running and I feel good,” said the star who has won the leagues in Thokoza, Boksburg and Westonaria. He will be back in Rand West City again on August 6 to run the Zet Sinqe Series in Mohlakeng.

In the senior men’s 4km category, local Andries Sesedi of Colossus Athletics Club had it tough considering his opponent was Marko Bucarizza of Born to Run Athletics Club. Although he gave it his all, Andries had to contend with second place in a time of 12 minutes and 50 seconds behind Marco who finished first by a whisker in 12 minutes and 38 seconds. Third was Themba Thingane from Future Champs Athletics Club with a time of 13 minutes and nine seconds.

Motlatsi Sesing, Andries’ coach said, “We are now looking forward to the CGA Provincial Championships in Kagiso on August 20 where we expect the battle to continue between Marco and Andries. There will also be stern competition from Kabelo Seboko from Boxer Athletics Club as well as Ryan Mphahlele from Tembisa.”

In the men’s 10km event, Elvis Tau from Mr Price Elite won in a time of 33 minutes and 34 seconds followed by Sakhile Sangweni from Gallopers in second with a time of 33 minutes and 55 seconds.

Maria Shai from Boxer won the women’s 10km category in a time of 42 minutes and 42 seconds, with Nchatiseng Molefe from UJ in second.

“As the local organising committee we are happy to have been given this opportunity by CGA to host an event of this kind. We are now looking forward to hosting the Zet Sinqe as well as Street Mile Series both on August 6,” said Nthabiseng Nkosi, Mohlakeng Athletics Club chairperson and member of the CGA Cross Country Commission.
