Who is strong enough to face a Gladiator?

The search is on for the best 24 contestants to face the Gladiators in the new upcoming series, Arena of Fire, and the Gauteng time trials were held in Randfontein recently.

The search is on for those brave, fit and strong enough to go head-to-head with Gladiators in an all-new exciting upcoming TV series.

Remember Giant, Granite, Ice, Spider, Warrior and Fire? They were but some of the big names in the hit TV show decades ago known as the South African Gladiators or MTN Gladiators. Soon, this battle between Plain Janes and Ordinary Jacks (basically the public) and the 133kg Gladiators will be back with a vengeance …

André Killian, co-owner and executive producer of Blackwater Films and one of the organisers (along with 4Strong and Interactive Security) of the Gauteng time trials which were held in Randfontein on Saturday, June 4, explained the event was part of the national search for 24 of the best contestants to face the Gladiators in the new TV series called Arena of Fire.

He added that 180 contestants took part in the time trials where they had to impress in a bit of everything – speed, power and endurance.

There was great commitment from contenders,” Andre commented.

The town’s very own Gladiator, Sonet Behr, aka Adira said, “The contestants were impressive, committed and showed dedication. I think the trials went very well. I was impressed. There was a lot of sweat and literally not one contestant gave up.”

She said Arena of Fire is what they call the ‘Gladiator Arena’ – the same as 20 years ago. She is the overall team captain for Gladiators and was one of two Gladiators supporting contenders on the day. The other one was Lorraine Minnie aka Lynx.

“My schedule has been hectic recently. In the past four weeks I had travelled to the Free State and the Northern Cape for our anti-bullying campaign, and did marketing for Gladiators on several radio stations. I am currently in Cape Town for the time trials to be held there.”

Whilst the Gauteng time trial results will only be available after the Cape Town trials, the Herald can reveal that Louis Smith was the best finisher in Randfontein with a time of three minutes and 22 seconds.
