West Rand SAPS Soccer League kicks off to a great start

SWGC currently sits on top of the standings followed by Kagiso Masters, City of Johannesburg EMS and Carletonville SAPS.

Wednesday, March 16 saw the West Rand SAPS Soccer League fixtures get underway to mark the beginning of the 2022/ 23 season that promises plenty of competition amongst the affiliates.

Obey’s Driving School exchanged blows with the Honeydew SAPS at the Cosmo City Sports Complex in an encounter that saw the two sides share the spoils.

With one goal apiece the match ended with both side showing a lot of respect for each other, and setting an example of good sportsmanship.

The rest of the fixtures were played at the Kagiso Sports Complex with matches starting late in the afternoon, and the last match being played in the evening under flood lights.

South West Gauteng College (SWGC) faced Agriculture Department in a high-intensity match that had all the fireworks from the first whistle.

Agriculture Department drew first blood as they opened their account through a defensive error that presented the perfect opportunity for marksman to rattle the net from close range.

After a series of attacks from their wings Agriculture Department doubled the lead while SWGC were still finding their rhythm and struggling in the wet conditions.


SWGC pulled one back through the efforts of their lengthy target man just before the half-hour mark.

Both sides came back with their guns blazing in the second half and SWGC got the better of their opponents and caught them napping before the striker rounded off an intelligent move and scored the equaliser.

The match ended 4–3 in favour of SWGC who were awarded a penalty towards the end of the match and converted in style.

• City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) 1 – Magaliesburg SAPS 0

• Kagiso Masters 2 – UNISA 1

SWGC currently sits on top of the standings followed by Kagiso Masters, City of Johannesburg EMS and Carletonville SAPS.

According to league secretary SS Mokala the league will take the format of two legs where each team plays a home and an away game.

Mokala told the Northsider that all the teams are encouraged to use personnel from their workplace or organisation.
