Spartans karateka bag 70 medals at West Rand District Championships

Spartans Karate Club in Westonaria bagged 34 gold, 16 silver and 20 bronze medals (70 in total) at the West Rand District Championships in Glenharvie.

Twenty-four members of the Spartans Karate Club in Westonaria scooped up 70 medals (34 gold, 16 silver and 20 bronze) at the West Rand District Championships early in November in Glenharvie.

A proud Sensei Enzo Pillay said, “They performed spectacularly and the level of performance displayed by the students was top class. This display will ensure that these students will do well at the provincial championships early next year.”

Sensei Enzo added that this year’s tournament proved their club was getting stronger every year and that this year was the most successful competition calendar completed to date.

“Spartans now has three competitors ranked number one in Karate South Africa and a further eight competitors amongst the Top 10. Our club’s students are between the ages of five and 50 years and showed extreme dedication and courage in the run-up to the biggest challenge held annually on the West Rand,” he said.

He went on to say that karate instils discipline, respect and knowledge in their students, and that everyone involved in the sport is part of their family; they will always reap the benefits of being able to express themselves and grow exponentially.

“It goes without saying that parents must factor in discipline in the lives of their children, and karate is one such sport that takes care of this aspect for many parents who are caught up in daily work,” Enzo added.
