West Rand swimmers shine at Soncini Games
Team West Rand bagged four medals – two gold, a silver and a bronze – at OR Tambo Soncini Social Gauteng Provincial Games in Germiston recently.
Three teams from Toekomsrus, Mohlakeng and Carletonville formed part of Team West Rand that took part in the OR Tambo Soncini Social Gauteng Provincial Games at Delville Swimming Pool in Germiston on Saturday, November 6.
Team West Rand consisted of 18 swimmers between the ages of 13 and 17 who battled it out in various freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and relay events. Other swimming teams that competed include Team Tshwane, Team Johannesburg, Team Gauteng Schools, Team Ekurhuleni, Team Sedibeng, Team West Rand and the Para Team of Gauteng.
“The Soncini Provincial Programme started with a training camp in September at the Hillcrest Swimming Pool in Pretoria. In October, a team selection process took place again at the same venue where clubs had to earn their spot at the Soncini Games,” said manager of the Marine’s swimming team in Toekomsrus, Annelene Rooskrans.
She added that participation in the Soncini Games came at no cost to the clubs and teams as it was planned by provincial government, district municipalities, Aquatics Gauteng as well as other stakeholders.
Annelene would like to say thank you to the wonderful coaches Tyrone Rooskrans and Gerrie Grove, and the other team manager Hajiera Mabanga for making the event such a big success.
