Women take fitness challenge to the streets

'It was about taking fitness to the people this Women's Day. We have been doing this for a long time at open spaces such as parks, sport facilities and so on, only to be stopped by Covid-19 and lockdowns.'

Women of all shapes and sizes celebrated National Women’s Day with a Fitness Challenge hosted by the Don Juliano Health Club on Ralerata Street.

The three-hour fitness session took participants through gruelling tasks and high-intensity training on a cold and dusty morning.

“It was about taking fitness to the people this Women’s Day. We have been doing this for a long time at open spaces such as parks, sport facilities and so on, only to be stopped by Covid-19 and lockdowns. That day we hosted the event at one of the area’s popular shisanyama or braai spots. The aim was to celebrate women and fitness, although a few supportive men did participate,” said organiser, fitness instructor and an official at the Department of Home Affairs, Hilda Biyela.

She added that this is also a way to show especially women that any form of exercise is vital during a pandemic, which is a challenge to our mental strength.
