Local boys Andries Sesedi and Kabelo Melamu were too good for the seasoned Lucky Mohale in the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) Cross Country League held in Simunye recently.
The trio led the men’s 10km race from the start but it was Lucky who went ahead first. Training partners Andries from Zenzele who is running for the Mohlakeng Colossus Athletics Club, and Kabelo, also from Mohlakeng, running for Murray & Roberts, eventually caught up with Lucky.
Andries was the first to cross the finish line in a winning time of 31 minutes and 31 seconds,m while Kabelo placed second with a time of 31 minutes and 36 seconds. Lucky had to be happy with a third place and his time was 32 minutes and 58 seconds.
Kabelo and I participated to test our fitness. It was tough not training as often as during lockdown. There were no races, only hard training,” said Andries.
CGA Cross Country chairman Steve Khanyile added, “We unfortunately cannot have spectators but a few officials, coaches and athletes only as per the Covid-19 protocols, but we are just happy to once again host events.”
Andries and Kabelo said they were now looking forward to the CGA Provincial Championships in Kagiso on August 28 as well as the National Cross Country Championships in KwaZulu-Natal on September 18.
“We are focused on the championships,” Andries concluded.
