Running event for late former CGA Cross Country vice chairperson

The first of Zet Sinqe Series Runs for the year in partnership with Central Gauteng Athletics(CGA) started in Westonaria.

The Zithulele Sinqe Foundation recently hosted the first of the Zet Sinqe Series Runs for the year starting in Westonaria.

The run in partnership with Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) took place on Saturday, June 26 at the Westonaria Sports Complex.

CGA communications officer Atiso Molefe said this was the first series of its kind to be held without spectators following strict safety protocols as per Athletics South Africa (ASA) and government Covid-19 regulations.

He explained the series is in honour of the late Zithulele Sinqe, a former CGA Cross Country vice chairperson and dedicated development coach with an IAAF Level two coaching qualification.

“The series is not only about honouring the late Zithulele, but also to unearth the new talent and assist in furthering their education as part of the mission of the Zithulele Sinqe Foundation.”

He explained that they kicked off the series with an early-hour 5km fun run where Lehlohonolo Lusiti finished with a time of 17 minutes and three seconds.

Lehlohonolo said the victory boosted his confidence.

“It was my first time winning a road race since the outbreak of Covid-19. I’m very happy,” he said.

Atiso added they saw other great performances like in the Street Mile where Carmenittah Mogajane finished in a time of five minutes and 59 seconds, and Siyanda Dladla in five minutes and 51 seconds.

During the final race of the day, U/19 athletes Ofentse Bokaba, Fusi Ntoloane and Tshepo Ntutwana proved their worth, with Bokaba crossing the finish line first with a time of four minutes and 33 seconds; Fusi in second (four minutes and 39 seconds) and Tshepo third (four minutes and 49 seconds).

Zintle Mokoka, who represented the Zithulele Sinqe Foundation, said she was pleased with the outcome of the event even though the pandemic did not allow the series run to be hosted last year.

“We’ve managed to pull it off and work closely with schools with athletics bursaries so that the talent we see can hopefully find a permanent home.”

The next event is scheduled to take place on August 21 in Germiston.
