Randfontein Rugby Club held its annual general meeting (AGM) on Friday, 9 April reflecting on a year disrupted by the pandemic, its new plans and the appointment of committee members.

According to Johan Cronje, chairman of the club, although the impact of Covid-19 was immense, they didn’t dwell on what could be worse; instead, they made sure that they focus on the positives.

During his speech Johan applauded the club for being able to withstand all the challenges and difficulties – difficulties exacerbated by the pandemic.

“When 2020 started, we thought it would be a great year that would bring the best for us, but we admit 2020 was hard,” Cronje said.

The club suffered certain setbacks such as burglaries, as homeless people used the pavilions while the club was closed, but such incidents have since been brought under control.

Cronje thanked his committee members for making sure that despite the effects of Covid-19, they’ve made it their mission to ensure that the team stayed united, and that people drew strength from each other during such a difficult period.

“Our finances were boosted by leasing our fields to athletics clubs and two football clubs, and a wrestling club also uses our facilities,” Cronje added.

He said the club will bring the community together again by hosting numerous events including golf days, cheese-and-wine functions, as well as father-and-son days.

“We would like to thank everyone who managed to come to the meeting and we hope that this will be a great year that will allow us to take our club to new and great heights,” Cronje concluded.
