First West Rand marathon postponed due to Coronavirus outbreak

Second event officially confirmed to be postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The first West Rand Marathon that was scheduled to take place this weekend, on Sunday, 22 March at the Greenhills Stadium in Randfontein has been postponed due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

According to Keoagile Rakgang, assistant events coordinator, “The West Rand Marathon team believes that this decision is in the best interest of the safety and well-being of the runners, officials and everyone associated with this sport event.

“We will post regular updates on our website, social media channels and local media to communicate about the new date, which is yet to be determined. We share your disappointment and thank you for your understanding during this difficult time,” she said.

Locally, this was the second event in town to be postponed officially due to the COVID-19 outbreak, following the announcement that the Randfontein Business Information Breakfast (Randbib) was also postponed.

According to Joy Hamann of the Randfontein Publicity Association (RPA), “In light of the most recent developments with the Coronavirus and president Cyril Ramaphosa’s address to the nation recently, Randbib has decided to postpone the business breakfast that was to take place at Cottage Lodge on Wednesday, 18 March until further notice”.
