Randfontein boxing legend dies

'The news shook and inflicted pain in the eyes of the society of Mohlakeng' – Rand West City mayor about the passing of boxing legend Peter 'Terror' Mathebula.

Peter Terror Mathebula, a boxing legend from Mohlakeng, died in the Leratong Hospital during the weekend.

Terror made history back in 1980 when he beat Korean, Tae-Shik Kim in the USA, to become the first black South African to win a world title.

Brenda Mahuma, Executive Mayor of the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM), expressed her condolences to the family.

“The community of Mohlakeng in Rand West City woke up to the shivering news of the passing of boxing legend, Peter Terror Mathebula. The news shook and inflicted pain in the eyes of the society of Mohlakeng,” she said.

She added that in 2017, the municipality hosted a boxing tournament at the Ramosa Hall as part of honouring the boxing legend. The tournament was broadcast on SuperSport.

Historic boxing bout in Mohlakeng dubbed “historic”

“As we bow our heads in saluting the contribution of the boxing legend, we will use the period to reflect on the good memories shared with the deceased. The municipality will continue to honour and put more programmes [together] that are meant to preserve the legacy of the deceased. We take the honour and say thank you for placing Mohlakeng on the world map,” Mahuma added.
