Mohlakeng team wins Greater Randfontein Summer Soccer Games

Local team wins soccer tourney against Zimbabweans-laden team.

House Party, a Mohlakeng football team is the Greater Randfontein Summer Soccer Games champion after beating United Football Club from Langlaagte recently.

Sello Mokoena of House Party was first to get onto the score sheet with a goal just eight minutes into the game. Mani Mavungo of United FC then responded in the 34th minute to make it 1–1 just before halftime.

With just seconds into the second half, Sello put his team back into the lead with yet another goal to make it 2–1 but United FC never gave up as Mustafa Ponyefa equalised in the 32nd minute.

With both teams locked at 2–all after the final whistle, it went down to penalties.

The boys from Mohlakeng kept their cool and won 4–2 on penalties to send United FC – a team mostly consisting of players from Zimbabwe – with their hands on their hips.

“This game indeed signifies the message: ‘No To Xenophobia’ and that soccer and sport can bring people together,” said Abe Montoede, event coordinator.

The games were also graced by the presence of Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) speaker, councillor Violet Nqina Mzondeki.
