Popular Wilro Cycle challenge gets a makeover

The annual cycling challenge is making an exciting new change for the cyclists

The Wilro Lions Cycle Challenge (WLCC) will be renamed as the Wilro Lions Gravel Grinder for the upcoming race that will be held on 19 April next year.

For the past 19 years, the WLCC has been a well supported event, known to be a safe and challenging ride enjoyed by all, but due to the poor condition of the roads as well as the heavy traffic that have made it more dangerous, the decision has been made to change it to a much safer gravel route.

The exciting 20th annual challenge will kick off at the Tarlton International Raceway, where the cyclists can join in on the 95km or 55km race. The new route is something totally different, and will still be enjoyable for all participants.

“All members of the community are welcome to come and join the race. The Wilro Lions members are all volunteers from different walks of life and professions – we strive to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate than ourselves. Our motto is simply ‘We Serve’ and our pillars of service include Vision, Hunger, Diabetes, Childhood Cancer, our Environment and of course our Youth. The funds we raise from our Annual Cycle Race will enable us to perhaps sponsor another Guide Dog for the Blind or Service Dog for a child with Autism, also to provide Comfort Kits for Kids with Cancer and continue supporting our feeding scheme, and providing a bursary for a deserving student, enabling him or her to study further and improve his or her life. Sometimes it’s just a random act of kindness that also makes a difference – we believe that kindness matters!” Sandy van Heerden concluded.
