It’s SPAR Women’s Challenge in Joburg time!

The build-up is done, the Face of the Race has been chosen and the excitement created. Today it's time for the SPAR Women’s Challenge in Joburg!

It’s time for the Joburg leg of the SPAR Women’s Challenge at Marks Park in Emmarentia.

The Joburg Challenge is always a fun family day, with a KidZone where the youngsters will be cared for and entertained, while Mom pounds the streets. Jumping castles and face-painting are just part of the fun provided for the little ones.

For the adults, entertainment comes from the fresh and exciting band, Rubber Duc. These four young men – lead vocalist Nick Jordaan and his partners Brendan Campbell, Sheldon Sham and Amiel Gopal – have made quite a name for themselves with their innovative blend of folk/ swing/ hop.

On a more competitive note, the SPAR Women’s 10km Challenge Grand Prix will reach its climax today.

Namibian sensation Helalia Johannes (Nedbank) has the Grand Prix title more or less in the bag after winning the five previous races all in record time. She has a total of 150 points, having earned bonus points in all five races. She also finished third in the marathon at the world athletics championships in Doha, Qatar recently.

It will also be a very special day for one of South Africa’s most successful athletes, Sonja Laxton. Sonja, whose running career spans more than five decades, will be running her 100th SPAR Women’s Challenge 10km race. During that time, she has notched up 79 victories in all age categories, except the junior category – and that is probably only because the SPAR Women’s Challenge did not exist when she was a junior!
