Lukhanyo Secondary School, the defending champions in the annual De Lucho Spectrum Schools Soccer Tournament, suffered a shock defeat to tournament debutantes Magalies Seconday School recently.

The tournament is held annually to honour current Mohlakeng PSL Black Leopard player, Karabo Stich Tshepe at the Mohlakeng Patrick Ace Ntsoelengoe Stadium.

Approximately 36 minutes into the first half, a beauty of a header by Kabelo Lengana for Magalies found the back of the net and was the only goal scored.

Not even the presence of Orlando Pirates U/19 goalkeeper, Ephraim Mothibedi, on the side of the locals, could prevent the determined visitors from taking all the glory on the day.

On the receiving end, Junior Mangole for Magalies proved a point at the tournament after being named goalkeeper of the tournament. Fellow teammate, Thabo Skosana, was named player of the tournament .

“We are happy that the third year of the tournament was a success. My co-organiser, Bafana Ngubeni, and I are trying to keep this tournament alive despite the funds having to come from own pockets. We would, however, like to thank the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation for supplying us with kit, trophies, medals and balls and Abe Montoedi for the soccer nets,” said Jacob Danny Tamapo, one of the organisers.

He added, “Our aim for the future is to attract schools and other academies, both private and public, from across the West Rand”.

This year, the teams had a moment of silence to show their respect for the late development coach, Sello Petersen, and referee and goalkeeper, Tshidiso Chacha, who coached the Rand West City Women’s Soccer team at the OR Tambo Municipal Games.
