Kids’ soccer tournament in Greenhills

The whole concept of the tournament was to close the gap between the private and the public schools.

A total of 150 children participated in the 2019 Socca Kids and Baracell Christian Academy Seven-A-Side Invitation Tournament on Saturday, 18 May.

According to the coordinator of the tournament, Anton Meerkotter, the whole concept of the tournament, was to close the gap between the private schools and public schools, by exposing all the schools to soccer, in order to improve their skills.

“We saw the gap and decided to link the schools in a development program where we can give them more exposure to a higher standard of soccer,” Anton said.

Socca Kidz, Aster Private Academy, Grace Christian Academy, Burning Boys FC and Carleton Jones High School were all part of the tournament.

Anton said it was important for the schools to participate, particularly those who do not usually get a chance to do so because they lack sport facilities. He said these schools are often excluded from many sporting activities.

Anton said Burning Boys FC took the first place for the U/13s, Grace Academy was second, and the third place was taken by Socca Kidz A.

“In the U/16 category, first place went to Burning Boys FC, second was Socca Kids A, and in third place we had Aster Private Academy,” Anton added.

In the finals, Burning Boys Foot Ball defeated Grace Christian Academy by 4–0. The U/16 final was between Burning Boys and Socca Kidz A, with Burning Boys winning by 1–0.

“The big match of the day was the U/19 final, played between Carleton Jones A and Carleton Jones B. After going to penalties, the B team managed to beat the A team by 5 –4.”

Anton said the tournament received positive feedback from the community, and encouraged all the schools to take part in such activities.

“The tournament went quite well, and on the day we did not have any serious incidents. We would like to thank the community for such a fun-filled day,” he added.
