Calling all cycling lovers to the 100CycleChallenge

Second annual 100 Cycle Challenge to offer lovers of the sport a unique spectator experience on the East Rand.

Road cyclists on the West Rand and beyond are encouraged to enter the 100 Cycle Challenge to be held in Ekurhuleni.

The 100 Cycle Challenge is timed by RaceTec and sanctioned and partnered by Cycling South Africa. What is said to be Autumn’s biggest racing event for road cyclists from across Gauteng and the rest of South Africa will take place on Sunday, 5 May.

Now in its second year, the race will once again start and finish at Germiston Lake, with both a 100km and a 50km route on offer.

According to Hugo van Heerden of the 100 Cycle Challenge, fans of cycling will be able to have a unique spectator experience when the fastest riders in the race – the professional teams of elite male road cyclists competing for UCI points – start last at noon and, therefore, finish at approximately 2.30pm.

He said to add to the excitement, the UCI race has been lengthened to 130 kilometres to give the professional teams an opportunity to race six laps of five kilometres each around Germiston Lake.

“The 100 Cycle Challenge wishes everybody a day of fun and excitement – this year’s Race Village offers a variety of coffee and food vendors, craft beer and gin, the purest spring water from deep underneath the Tsitsikamma mountains, stalls by product and service suppliers to the road cycling industry, a safe kiddies area, a free and secure bike park managed by Cyclesure, and live entertainment on the @100Cycle Stage.”

To enter, simply go to www.100cyclechallenge.co.za. Entries close at midnight on Monday, 22 April. This year, the 100 Cycle Challenge is dedicated to the development of the sport of cycling and supports the developmental initiatives of East Rand-based NPOs Ekurhuleni Cycling Club and The Urban Ruins.

Hugo added that the race has also extended an invitation to a wide variety of charities and causes to use it as a platform to raise funds. The participating charities are listed at www.100cyclechallenge.co.za.

Road cyclists are invited to follow the race on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter @100cycle, #SweatTheSunday, #SweatThe100, #100InMay, #TheRaceWithSoul, and #SweatFor Charity.
